BMWC Ła Deilyá Celebration!

On Saturday, December 9th 2017, Black Mesa Water Coalition hosted its very own “Ła Deilyá Celebration” at the Twin Arrows Navajo Casino near Flagstaff, Arizona. Partner organizations, solidarity warriors, close friends, relatives from around the nation and beyond, were invited to the event. Around 70 people attended the private dinner and over 100 people participated in the main event which included live music from Latigo, Rez-country band out of Kayenta, Sonaya, reggae band out of Hopi, and Three Bad Jacks, rockabilly band out of Los Angeles!

Latigo came in full-swing, people were two-steppin’, singing old country favorites like Wagon Wheel, Reservation Road, and other covers that we all know and love. Sonaya came in with some of their original music. A brother and sister combo, Sonaya came to impress and that they did! Last but not least, Three Bad Jacks ended the night rocking! Singing their hits like It’s Forever, Remember the Nights, and Gone Gone Goodbye!

The best part of the night was seeing how happy everyone was to be a part of this celebration. For that moment in time, we remembered how important it is to be together and how important it is to just have fun. At the end of the night, we called it a success; grateful for all the laughter shared and the memories made.

When we first began thinking about a celebration, there was one thing we wanted to make sure of: no presentations, no meetings, no agendas, just fun. We also started thinking about why we wanted to hold such a grand event and we realized what a crazy year it’s been! 2017 was the first Trump Year (gross), the Navajo Generating Station announced its closure (finally), the Grand Canyon Escalade Project seized (yay!), Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments are shrinking (!!!), we might be paying more for internet, and TRUMP!

Anyway…one thing’s for certain, no matter where we are; we made it through the year, we still made a change, Ła Deilyá! Whether the change was personally, within our communities, or with how we treat each another; the year has come to an end, so let’s embrace one another and hope for a better 2018!

Special thanks to Salt.V.Mo, Three Bad Jacks, Latigo, Sonaya, DJ Tso, Pax Harvey, Pax Harvey III, Jake Hoyungawa, and Twin Arrows Casino and Resort. Happy Holidays!
